Encephalopathy generally describes a condition that affects brain function. There are different causes of it, including infection, exposure to toxins, and more.
Encephalopathy makes an appearance within the name myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). While the name itself may not feel sufficient or completely accurate for describing the disease, cognitive function and inflammation in the central nervous system are accepted components of ME/CFS.
OMF’s Collaborative Center at Uppsala is investigating how post-viral encephalopathy is one potential mechanism of the onset of ME/CFS. Read more about the project here.
