Et indlæg, der beskriver nanonålen, er blevet offentliggjort i Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). Ronald W. Davis, PhD, er seniorforfatter. Rahim Esfandyarpour, PhD, er hovedforfatter. Nanonålen er en test, der måler forandringer i blodplasmaets immunceller med salt som stressfaktor. Inden i nanonålen interfererer immuncellerne med en svag elektrisk strøm. Forandringen i elektrisk aktivitet hænger direkte sammen med prøvens sundhedstilstand. Testen, der stadig er i pilotfasen, baserer sig på, hvordan en persons immunceller reagerer på stress. Med blodprøver fra 40 personer — 20 med ME / CFS og 20 uden — gav testen nøjagtige resultater, der helt præcist identificerede alle patienterne og ingen af de raske personer.
