A phenotype is an observable characteristic (e.g., physical trait, presence of disease), and it is determined by the interaction of a person’s genotype (genetic makeup) and their environment. As a generalized example, the same genotype might result in a different phenotype based on a person’s diet.
People with ME/CFS have different phenotypes than people who are considered healthy, but there are also different phenotypes within the disease, too. The more obvious example of that is the variability in symptom presentation among people with ME/CFS, but phenotype changes also go beyond what can be seen in the clinic.
OMF’s Collaborative Center at Montreal has published a paper as part of the DOMINO-ME project, describing a difference in the phenotype of haptoglobin in people with ME/CFS. Check out the publication in the Journal of Translational Medicine.
