Symptom burden

Graphic titled “Symptom Burden” where a clinician with a stethoscope is holding a glowing human silhouette over a connected network.

The term symptom burden is actually quite complex in its meaning. Overall, it refers to the impact of multiple symptoms on a person’s health and well-being, both physically and emotionally.

Symptom burden is especially complicated in ME/CFS because it can encompass the severity, frequency, & duration of symptoms, the number of symptoms a person experiences, how those symptoms impact function, and how many & which body systems are impacted. It can be challenging to measure all the facets of symptom burden in research, whether through patient-reported outcomes (i.e., surveys) or clinical assessments.

OMF’s team of researchers incorporates symptom burden into the portfolio of work in a variety of ways, spanning different methods of assessing function to analysis that clusters participants based on symptom burden. Read more about OMF’s research projects here.
